The Voices That Stay With Us: Pat Brown | Bingara

What happens when a familiar voice tells a story few people have ever heard?

In Episode 2 of *The Soundtrails Box*, Dr. Hamish Sewell revisits Bingara, a small Australian town, and the remarkable story of Patricia (Pat) Brown.

Born in 1930, Pat was one of ten children. She was nine when the Second World War began.

Several of her brothers enlisted. Ted was killed in New Guinea. Jim died when the hospital ship carrying him was bombed. Jack survived years as a prisoner of war in Singapore.

Pat’s memories reveal the consequences of war through the experience of a sister and her family.

When Dr. Sewell interviewed Pat in her early eighties, she questioned why anyone would be interested in what she had to say.

Several months after the Bingara Soundtrail was completed, Pat died. Her recording was played at her funeral.

Many of those gathered had known her for years, yet few had heard her share this history.

That moment illustrates why Soundtrails matters.

Through place-based audio storytelling, communities can connect personal memories and cultural heritage to the landscapes where they belong.

Real people. Real memories. Deeply personal histories.

Pat Brown’s voice reminds us that some of the most important stories are carried by people who never considered themselves remarkable.
