There is a lot happening at Soundtrails. Over the past few months, the work has continued to reinforce something important: Soundtrails has never really been about technology alone. It is about what technology makes possible. Stories experienced in place. Communities preserving and sharing knowledge. Young people learning to listen differently. Educators turning landscapes into classrooms. Producers creating experiences that connect people more deeply with the places around them.
In October, Soundtrails is exploring:
New Stories, New Places
How place based storytelling connects people with landscape, history and community.
Taking Soundtrails into Primary Education
Giving young people opportunities to research, interview, record and tell the stories of the places around them.
Higher Education and the Soundtrails Academy
Helping students move beyond studying locative media to actually creating it.
Learning from the People Doing the Work
Conversations with producers, oral historians, artists, academics and storytellers exploring voice, memory, stewardship and place.
Technology in Service of Something Human
Exploring how technology can deepen human connection rather than replace it.
Underlying all of this is a simple idea: technology should deepen our humanity, not replace it. Soundtrails co founder Hamish Sewell has been having some wonderful conversations with practitioners working in these spaces, while new Soundtrails, educational opportunities and possibilities for independent producers continue to develop.
