The street revitalising project in Miles, Western Queensland, which Soundtrails was proud to be part of, has won two awards: a regional Achievement Award with Australian Institute of Landscape Architects (AILA); anda Movement and Place at the Ministers Award for Urban Design Department of Energy and Public Works (Queensland). Big congratulations to Bark Design Architects, Fourfold Studio and POMO. You guys are doing great things.
For Soundtrails, it is also heartening to know that nestled now amidst the elegant street design, landscaping and colourful bougainvillea, is the inimitable voice of Merlene Coates Freeman. Raised by her Grand Aunt Lilly to be ‘a lady’ after a drowning accident in 1940 on the Dogwood Creek took the life of her young mother and three others, and very nearly her, Merlene, the ‘orphan girl’ roamed the town freely.
Next time you’re heading west from Brisbane, do stop off, checkout the fabulous new streetscape and download the Soundtrail. Let yourself be led around by a gutsy woman who can’t forget the drowning, nor her love of this town. It’s a truly remarkable journey.
