Soundtrails welcomes veteran muso and Radio National radio journalist, Greg Appel, who is currently producing the up-and-coming Inverell Soundtrails.
“It’s really just the beginning of a process for me. I’ve made a lot of radio programs and videos about locations. But working on a Soundtrail promises to be something else. I enjoy coming in from outside a town, getting to know the stories and finding characters and stories that bring it to life. A keen fisher once told me how fish like to hang around a structure, like a reef, and that’s where you catch them. I feel buildings are a bit like that. Characters and stories bring them to life. So at the moment I’m fishing.
Central Inverell is a collage of buildings from all sorts of eras. At the start of the walk there’s a concrete Coles supermarket, with a small plaque indicating a huge ornate theatre stood here till 1975. Why would you knock it down? Who were the people that filled a theatre of that size? The people I spoke to love this place, but what makes Inverell…Inverell? I hope these audio stories will bring the old buildings to life, and provide some answers. Wars, fires, characters, change. These streets tell a micro tale of Australian history.”
